LAPD chief: Cops shouldn't tag immigrants - Record

Posted: 28 Oct 2009 04:37 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton says his department must stay out of the business of collaring illegal immigrants.

In an opinion piece he wrote for Tuesday's Los Angeles Times, Bratton says the LAPD should continue a three-decade-old policy that prohibits officers from stopping someone solely to determine whether they're in the country illegally.

Bratton says it's harder for police to do their job if witnesses won't come forward because they're afraid of deportation.

Dozens of state and local police agencies around the country have joined a federal program giving officers the powers of federal immigration agents. But the chief says his replacement should focus on community outreach and not community alienation.

Bratton will step down Saturday to join a Virginia-based global security firm.

Fletcher Starts Medical Business - WCPO

Posted: 28 Oct 2009 08:54 AM PDT

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Former Gov. Ernie Fletcher has kept a low profile since leaving office two years ago.

The State Journal in Frankfort reports that Fletcher, a physician, recently started a health care business in Cincinnati. Fletcher will serve as the CEO of Alton Healthcare, based in the Blue Ash suburb.

The company will partner with doctors and hospitals to build a "franchise-like" network that includes developing commercial medical real estate.

Fletcher did not respond to several requests by the newspaper for an interview. Former first lady Glenna Fletcher has said the couple is staying out of the spotlight.

Fletcher, a Republican, served one term before he was defeated by Steve Beshear in 2007.
