Enter multiple comma-separated email recipients.A Creighton University business conditions index for a nine-state area including Oklahoma inched upward in December, although it ended 2009 on the frailest of notes, its founder said. The Mid-America survey of supply managers made it to 50.3, up from November's 47.5, said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the monthly report. An index of 50.0 is considered growth neutral, and a figure greater than 50 indicates an expanding economy over the next three to six months. For Oklahoma, the economic report remained down, still reflecting large job losses. For the fourth month in a row, the state's overall index remained below growth neutral, dropping to 43.0 from 49.4 in November, Goss said. Components were new orders at 39.5, production, or sales, at 48.9, delivery lead time at 52.7, inventories at 41.1 and employment at 33.0. Over the past decade, Oklahoma lost almost 46,000 jobs — 25.8 percent of its manufacturing employment, with most of the losses coming as a result of productivity growth of almost 40 percent over the decade. "While I expect the state to grow overall jobs by 0.2 percent in the first half of 2010, manufacturing job growth will be nil as producers grow output via productivity gains," Goss said. The survey also includes Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. Oklahoma City University and Federal Reserve economist Steve Agee said month-to-month variations in the report don't often mean as much as surveys summarizing quarterly figures. "A three-month average tells me more," he said. But Agee agrees with national economists who say despite a surprisingly strong manufacturing activity report also released Monday from the Institute for Supply Management, economic recovery still depends on an increasing demand from consumers and businesses, not just building up inventories. "That's still about 72 percent of the gross domestic product," he said.Share with a friend
