There has been a lot of reporting and commentary from various news media in recent weeks about the financial situation 's parent company, Canwest Limited Partnership. For the most part, what you may have read or heard is likely true. However, a number of speculative pieces produced have clearly missed the mark.

With Friday's announcement that Canwest Limited Partnership and its subsidiaries have voluntarily filed for creditor protection, I'm certain we will be facing further media reports that may misrepresent certain realities. Promoter charged with Ponzi scheme

A suburban Phoenix concert promoter has been accused of running a Ponzi scheme that bilked about 140 investors out of $25 million, federal authorities said Thursday.

A 37-count indictment charges Miko Dion Wady of Chandler, Ariz., with wire fraud and money laundering.

According to the indictment, the 34-year-old Wady convinced victims he was promoting concerts or tours of top-tier acts such as The Rolling Stones and Barbra Streisand and needed the money to pay up-front costs.

The scheme operated from 2004 through 2007, with Wady and three others who haven't been indicted collecting more than $250 million from investors who were promised returns of 4 percent per month, prosecutors said.

The indictments alleges a classic Ponzi scheme, with money from new investors being used to pay off old investors.

Wady made an initial court appearance Thursday and was ordered held at least until a bail hearing set for Friday.

Fire kills worker at Chesapeake facility

A worker was killed in a fire Wednesday at a Louisiana natural gas gathering facility run by Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp.

Chesapeake Operating Inc. said the accident at Barksdale Air Force Base killed Jared Maus, 27, who had worked for the company for two years.

The fire closed the gas facility.

"We expect the shut-in to be temporary with a very marginal impact on our Louisiana production," J. Kevin McCotter, a company spokesman, told Bloomberg News on Thursday.

The accident occurred at Chesapeake's M&M North gas gathering facility that services the Sligo Field. The fire was "quickly controlled" and occurred during maintenance, McCotter said.

Target sales increase in December

Discount-store operator Target Corp. said Thursday that better-than-expected customer traffic helped its December sales rise.

Minneapolis-based Target also said it expects fourth-quarter earnings to "meet or exceed" analyst expectations of $1.11 per share.

Sales in stores open at least a year rose 1.8 percent during the five weeks ended Jan. 2, Target said. Sales of commodities such as health and beauty and food were the strongest sellers. Electronics, shoes and toys also were strong.

Home decor, besides holiday decorations, was weaker.

Sales rose 5 percent to $9.74 billion, Target said.

Year-to-date, sales in stores open at least one year are down 2.7 percent, Target said.

Sears expanding online efforts

Sears Holdings Corp. joined at least two other major retailers Thursday in allowing third parties — including some rivals — to sell items on its Web site.

Sears' latest push to beef up its Web presence follows similar moves by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., at walmart.com, and by Amazon.com, which have tussled recently over prices for books, movies and music.

Officials wouldn't say how many products were available at Sears.com before the announcement of "Marketplace at Sears.com.” But they said more than 10 million items were being sold there through 1,500 outside vendors by Thursday.

The vendors will pay Sears a listing fee plus a commission on any sales they make through the site. Sears didn't say how much it expects to make through the venture.

Sears has launched a series of online ventures since its chairman, financier Edward Lampert, announced in May 2008 that Sears Holdings would get more innovative online.

Guy who scammed city gets $11M in city business - Chicago Sun-Times

Posted: 09 Jan 2010 05:09 AM PST

'I PAID MY DUES' | Served time for phony bills, kickbacks in '80s

Body shop owner John Szybkowski once submitted a slew of phony bills to the City of Chicago for work on police cars.

He kicked back some of his illegal profits to city employees.

And he lied to a grand jury to cover it up, the feds alleged.

So what did the city do?

It gave him more than $11 million in new business.

Szybkowski, now in his 60s, was sentenced to three years in prison in 1981 for his role in one of the worst scandals in Chicago Police history.

Fifteen people -- including the son of then-Ald. Fred Roti, a made member of the Chicago mob -- were charged in the multimillion- dollar scheme. At the time, it was described as the biggest financial fraud ever discovered in the department. A key part of the scam involved Police Department employees approving fake work orders for police vehicles and getting kickbacks in return.

Szybkowski admitted in federal court to submitting about $50,000 in phony bills through his business, Central Auto Body Shop, 3548 W. North Ave.

Today, he owns the same body shop, with the same name and address, but his more recent dealings with the city have been more positive. His shop works on about 20 city vehicles a month, many of them police vehicles, Szybkowski said.

"Shucks, I learned my lesson," Szybkowski said Friday in his office at Central Auto Body. "I made a mistake, I paid my dues."

He said that during the time of the scandal, "you might have to give a little something" to get city business.

"Those days, never again," he said. "I might have kind of been sucked into it."

Szybkowski said he never recalled having to disclose his conviction to the city or having anyone from the city question him about it when he submitted bids.

The city requires potential city contractors to disclose significant felony convictions five years before a contract, but not ones before that.

The city's Department of Fleet Management now oversees the repair of city police vehicles, among other city vehicles. An assistant commissioner for Fleet Management, Eileen Joyce, said neither Fleet nor the city's procurement department had been aware of Szybkowski's conviction.

After the Chicago Sun-Times informed city officials of the matter, Fleet Management referred Central Auto Body's contract to the city's inspector general for investigation, out of caution, Joyce said. The city has no complaints about Central Auto Body's work and has a system in place to check on the work quality and billing of such vendors, Joyce said.

Investigators who uncovered the scandal were stunned when they were told that Szybkowski was getting more business from the city.

"I'm shocked," said former Chicago Police Supt. Joseph DiLeonardi. The investigation was launched during his tenure.

"What a disgrace. How they would take a chance on this guy is beyond me," said DiLeonardi, whose own brother was swept up in the scandal.

"It annoys me to see guys like this coming back. What does that say about the leaders of our city?" DiLeonardi said.

"It's amazing," added retired Chicago Police Lt. Richard Sandberg, who led the police Internal Affairs investigation.

Doing work for the city runs in Szybkowski's family. His son John Jr. is a city employee with Fleet Management.

Szybkowski said his son has nothing to do with his day-to-day business. His son occasionally works weekends in the body shop, Szybkowski said, and records show the son has disclosed the second job to the city.

In his city job, Szybkowski's son has no contact with outside vendors, but his second job at Central Auto Body has been referred for investigation to the inspector general and the city's Board of Ethics, Joyce said.

Szybkowski had to meet the city's requirements for using subcontractors owned by minorities and women. One minority subcontractor he uses is Sutton Ford, a dealership in south suburban Matteson.

Sutton Ford made news in 2003 when the dealership won a $49.2 million contract to supply Chicago with police cars after the city refused to certify the lowest bidder, located in the city, as a minority contractor, despite its being run by a black man with a substantial investment in it.
