| Wyclef Jean's charity: Better Business Bureau not recommending charity - Today's THV Posted: 15 Jan 2010 05:27 PM PST Groups that vet charities are raising doubts about the organization backed by Haitian-born rapper Wyclef Jean. They say the foundation's questionable accounting practices could hurt its ability to function in earthquake-hit Haiti even as hundreds of thousands of dollars pour in via text message. The Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance is not recommending Jean's group and suggests money be donated to relief organizations with more experience in handling disasters. The 37-year-old Grammy-winning artist has been imploring followers to text "Yele" to 501501 to donate $5 to his foundation in support of Haitian earthquake victims. Jean has said he wants to raise $1 million a day. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Business briefs: 787 passes early flight tests; can add engineer - Everett Herald Posted: 16 Jan 2010 12:00 AM PST The Boeing Co. says it has completed initial airworthiness tests on its new 787 jetliner, which means the planes can now fly with flight test engineers in their cabins. Boeing said Friday that the two test planes have completed 15 flights to check out aircraft systems, performance, stability and handling. In the next phase of the testing, engineers will fly along to conduct detailed tests. The successful initial flights also will allow more planes to enter the flight test program. The first 787s have been flown to an altitude of 30,000 feet and at about three-quarters of their cruising speed. Boeing says that in the coming weeks, the aircraft will be taken to more than 40,000 feet and up to full cruising speed. Attorney to leave City Bank board Scott Hutchison, long-time attorney for Lynnwood-based City Bank, will be leaving the bank's board. Bank president Martin Heimbigner announced Friday that the move came in response to a Nasdaq warning that it requires its trading companies to have a board with a majority of members who are independent of the company. The bank had until June 30 to comply. The bank's seven-person board previously had only three independent members. New leader at Lynnwood's Crane Jim Hirning of Crane Aerospace & Electronics of has been named leader of its Lynnwood operations and a corporate vice president. Hirning will be responsible for daily operations and managing the supply chain. He was previously the senior materials manager of the site, a major aerospace supplier. JPMorgan profits rise four-fold JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s profit rose more than four-fold to $3.28 billion in the last three months of 2009, but the results released Friday were tempered by rising loan losses at its consumer bank. Its shares fell almost 1 percent in early trading. The bank had a sobering assessment of the economy, warning that it cannot say it has seen defaults on mortgages and other loans peak. Its earnings came on profits from its investment banking and asset management businesses, which thrived amid the now 10-month-old market rally. JPMorgan Chase earned $702 million a year earlier when the near-collapse of the mortgage banking business forced it to write down billions in loans. US Airways raises baggage fees US Airways on Friday raised baggage fees for travelers who check their luggage online. The higher online fees match those set in recent days by Delta, Continental, and United. US Airways said it will charge $23 to check the first bag online, and $32 to check the second. That's an increase from the previous online checked bag fees of $20 and $30. The fees to check bags at the airport are unchanged at the level set by US Airways in August — $25 for the first and $35 for the second.
