Fertilizer suppliers may gain as demand rebounds

TORONTO (Reuters) - North American fertilizer makers weathered dismal market conditions in 2009, but stocks in the sector may gain this year as early signs point to a strong recovery in crop nutrient demand. Shares of Potash Corp , Agrium Inc and Mosaic Co -- the big three of the North American fertilizer industry -- are little changed this year, despite recent data indicating tightening market conditions and stronger demand ahead of the spring planting season.

Dubai debt offer denied

DUBAI (Reuters) - Dubai's handling of the debt crisis at flagship Dubai World will affect its ability to attract future investment, British Business Secretary Peter Mandelson said on Sunday, amid a report the firm may offer creditors just 60 cents on the dollar. Mandelson said the Gulf Arab emirate, which shocked global markets in November with plans to delay repayment on $26 billion in debt, must reach a "demonstrably fair" deal with creditors.

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Kuwaiti telecom group Zain has agreed to offload its African assets to India's Bharti Airtel , Kuwait's state news agency said on Sunday, in a deal valued at $10.7 billion. The deal marks one of the biggest cross-border transactions in the Middle East in years and a turning point in the long-running saga around the third-biggest telecoms operator in the region.

Greeks say cuts necessary but not enough: poll

ATHENS (Reuters) - Austerity measures by Greece's socialist government to shore up the country's public finances and avert a deeper debt crisis are seen as necessary but insufficient, a poll published on Sunday showed. Under pressure from markets and its European peers, Greece will freeze public sector wages and cut salary allowances by 10 percent this year to chop its wage bill as it aims to shrink the deficit by four percentage points to 8.7 percent of GDP.

Germans say euro zone may have to expel Greece: poll

BERLIN (Reuters) - A majority of Germans want debt-ridden Greece to be thrown out of the euro zone if necessary and more than two-thirds oppose handing Athens billions of euros in credit, a poll published on Sunday showed. Vocal opposition to aid for Greece from members of Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition also grew at the weekend with several senior politicians expressing skepticism, especially as Germany's own recovery is fragile.

Luxembourg summit to discuss future of bank secrecy

ZURICH (Reuters) - High-level talks in Luxembourg on Sunday will assess whether there is a future for what remains of bank secrecy in Europe in the face of international pressure, but offshore centers are struggling to find common ground. Nearly a year after agreeing to help foreign states to chase tax evaders, the finance ministers of wealth management capital Switzerland and European Union secrecy strongholds Luxembourg and Austria will meet behind close door to discuss future strategies.

Ford sees Canada auto sales up 4 percent in 2010

TORONTO (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co expects growth in sales in the Canadian auto market at a tepid 4 percent this year as the economy struggles to regain its footing after a more than 10 percent drop in sales in 2009. That would mean about 1.52 million vehicles sold at a seasonally adjusted annual rate. About 1.65 million cars and light trucks were sold in 2007, the peak year for sales in Canada's auto market.

Japan to discuss consumption tax in March

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan will start discussing tax reform, including consumption tax, in March, Finance Minister Naoto Kan said on Sunday, in a clear sign ever that it will consider a rise in sales tax to deal with a yawning fiscal gap. "I want the government's tax panel to start a comprehensive discussion on tax, such as income tax, corporate tax and perhaps consumption tax and environment tax," Kan, also deputy prime minister, said on Fuji TV.

Bargain-hunters help lift TSX to higher close

TORONTO (Reuters) - Toronto's main stock index eked out a gain on Friday as bargain-hunters scooped up stocks seen as undervalued and the index's heavily weighted resource sectors trimmed losses brought on by concerns about China's monetary policy. The TSX rebounded late in the session after falling nearly 100 points as China's decision to increase bank reserve requirements raised worries about the move's impact on global growth.

Iron ore prices are likely to rise sharply: BHP chief

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Benchmark iron ore prices are set to rise sharply in the coming months due largely to a resurgence of demand from China, BHP Billiton chief executive Marius Kloppers said. Kloppers said in a television interview broadcast on Sunday that forward prices stood around 100 percent above benchmark prices, and demand from China had picked up from the global downturn faster than expected.
