| Indiana Business Apologizes for 'No Burmese' Sign - FOX News Posted: 13 Mar 2010 07:36 AM PST FORT WAYNE, Ind. A Fort Wayne business that posted a sign barring Burmese immigrants from entering could face a civil rights complaint. Ricker Oil Co. president Jay Ricker has apologized for the sign posted by an employee and says the business welcomes all customers. But director Gerald Foday of Fort Wayne's Metropolitan Human Relations Commission says he is considering filing a complaint. The sign attempted to bar Burmese people "for sanitary reasons." Fort Wayne is home to about 5,000 Burmese, the largest concentration in the United States. Many chew betel nut and spit the residue, which can result in red stains. Health department spokesman John Silcox says businesses can't banish an entire group because of an individual's actions. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Business Briefing - - Los Angeles Times Posted: 12 Mar 2010 11:58 PM PST American accused of more lapses Federal regulators are proposing more maintenance-related penalties against American Airlines. The Federal Aviation Administration said it would fine American $787,500 for three cases of alleged maintenance problems. In the most serious case, regulators say American operated a plane without replacing a central computer on the jet. In April 2008, pilots landing in Los Angeles noticed warning indicators going off and mechanics traced the problem to the computer, according to an FAA document. Instead of fixing the computer as required by federal rules, the mechanics wrote up the incident as a problem with the auto throttle and the plane flew 10 flights with a broken computer, the FAA said. A spokesman said American was reviewing the FAA charges. INTERNET Scammers pose as FBI, says FBI The cost of Internet fraud doubled in 2009 to about $560 million, the FBI said. The most common type of frauds reported were scams from people falsely claiming to be from the FBI. Individual complaints of Internet scams grew more than 20% last year, according to a report issued by the FBI in partnership with a private fraud-fighting group, the Internet Crime Complaint Center. The amounts taken by individual frauds ranged from less than $30 to more than $100,000, officials said. PRIVACY Netflix cancels rating contest Netflix has canceled a sequel to a $1-million contest to improve its movie recommendations. The DVD-by-mail-and-download service wants to avoid a legal showdown over the privacy rights of its subscribers. The retreat was triggered by a lawsuit alleging that Netflix violated a federal law prohibiting video rental firms from publicly sharing their customers' movie preferences. Netflix released millions of records on how its subscribers rated movies they watched in a 2006 contest aimed at improving its movie-recommendation system. No names were provided, but critics contend there was still enough information to identify subscribers. DRUGS Plavix label gets FDA black box The Food and Drug Administration is adding its strongest warning to the label for Plavix, cautioning that some patients do not respond well to the blockbuster blood thinner. The FDA said certain patients with a genetic variation cannot metabolize the drug, leaving them at increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Patients can determine whether they are "poor metabolizers" by taking a genetic test. The FDA advises those patients to use other blood thinners. The FDA added similar language to Plavix's label in November, but the new warning appears within a black box, the FDA's most severe safety labeling. | Britain to guarantee loan to GM, Vauxhall operations to ... - Detroit Free Press Posted: 13 Mar 2010 12:13 AM PST LONDON -- Britain will give a $410-million loan guarantee to General Motors to help keep its Vauxhall operations going in the country, a government official said Friday. That is well short of the $2.8 billion GM is seeking from European governments to help restructure Vauxhall and its other European unit, Germany-based Opel. British Business Secretary Peter Mandelson said that talks were ongoing with GM Europe and other European governments to finalize the funding terms and the implementation of a business plan. Mandelson said the two Vauxhall factories in Britain are "excellent plants employing a first-rate workforce." "We need Vauxhall to thrive as part of Britain's automotive manufacturing base and following our negotiations with GM Europe, I am confident it will do so," he added. Union leaders representing workers at the plants in Luton, north of London, and Ellesmere Port in northern England, welcomed the announcement. "This is great news for British industry," said Tony Woodley, joint leader of the Unite union. "The loan will help save thousands of jobs in Vauxhall's operations and in the 400 companies in its supply chain." GM abandoned a plan to sell the majority of Opel and Vauxhall to investors late last year, instead choosing to keep the European brands for itself. It said last week it would triple its own funding for Opel and Vauxhall and reduced the amount it was seeking from European governments after it became apparent they were unlikely to deliver the initially requested amount. | Union Pacific CEO seeing signs of better business - Vacaville Reporter Posted: 13 Mar 2010 01:46 AM PST NEW YORK ( -- The CEO of Union Pacific said Friday that shipments carried by the nation's biggest railroad are stronger than expected this year, but are still a long way from full recovery. In an interview with The Associated Press, Union Pacific's Jim Young said some key segments, including agricultural, automotive and intermodal shipments show signs of strength. Railroads are indicators of the nation's broader economic health because many things consumers and businesses use every day are shipped by rail. "I'm not willing to say the challenges are over, but some areas are pretty strong," Young said. Young said automotive shipments are up 60 percent from a year ago, but far from their peak three years ago. Intermodal shipments, or transfers between trucks and trains, are up about 20 percent, he said. Intermodal shipments can be closely tied to consumer spending because many retail goods, like electronics, clothes and toys, are transported that way. "It's too early to tell if the consumer has really got some sustained buying power," Young cautioned. Shipments of industrial products -- including cement, lumber, steel and newsprint -- are up about 4 percent compared with last year. But Young said volume is only about half of what it was before the recession, as demand for building materials remains soft. "When I see a pick up in industrial products, I'm thinking maybe there's some real legs to the recovery," he said. Union Pacific's total shipping volume is up about 11 percent compared with last year.Young said the real sign of Union Pacific's confidence in the economy will appear when the railroad starts hiring again. But that's not happening yet. Some furloughed employees have been called back to work, but about 3,500 remain on leave. Union Pacific has about 42,000 employees.
