Apple sues HTC over iPhone patents

NEW YORK - Apple Inc. sued Taiwanese phone maker HTC Corp. on Tuesday, accusing the rival of violating patents related to the popular iPhone. HTC was the first company to manufacture a cell phone based on Google Inc.'s Android operating system, which has emerged as a significant competitor to the iPhone. It is also making the Nexus One phone, which Google is selling directly to consumers. Apple said HTC has infringed on 20 of its patents covering aspects of the iPhone's user interface and hardware. In an e-mail message, HTC spokeswoman Linda Mills said the company only learned of the lawsuits on Tuesday through media reports and hasn't had time to review Apple's claims.

Research and Markets: Express Scripts - SWOT Framework Analysis - Businesswire.com

Posted: 02 Mar 2010 04:32 PM PST

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/b2fa39/express_scripts) has announced the addition of the "Express Scripts - SWOT Framework Analysis" report to their offering.

SWOT Analysis, is a strategic planning tool used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieving that objective.

The aim of any SWOT analysis is to identify the key internal and external factors that are important to achieving the objective. SWOT analysis groups key pieces of information into two main categories:

Internal factors - The strengths and weaknesses internal to the organization. External factors - The opportunities and threats presented by the external environment.

The internal factors may be viewed as strengths or weaknesses depending upon their impact on the organization's objectives. What may represent strengths with respect to one objective may be weaknesses for another objective. The factors may include all of the 4P's; as well as personnel, finance, manufacturing capabilities, and so on. The external factors may include macroeconomic matters, technological change, legislation, and socio-cultural changes, as well as changes in the marketplace or competitive position. The results are often presented in the form of a matrix.

SWOT analysis is just one method of categorization and has its own weaknesses. For example, it may tend to persuade companies to compile lists rather than think about what is really important in achieving objectives. It also presents the resulting lists uncritically and without clear prioritization so that, for example, weak opportunities may appear to balance strong threats.

Key Topics Covered:

  • A. Executive Summary
  • B. A Brief Profile of the Company
  • C. SWOT Framework Analysis
  • C.1 Strengths to Build Upon
  • C.2 Weaknesses to Overcome
  • C.3 Opportunities to Exploit
  • C.4 Threats to Overcome
  • D. Glossary of Terms

Expert predicts state population loss was anomaly - Tampa Bay Online

Posted: 02 Mar 2010 09:04 PM PST

Published: March 3, 2010

TAMPA - Florida's population loss last year may wind up being a one-time blip.

A leading population researcher predicts the state will start growing again this year.

The University of Florida's Bureau of Economic and Business Research predicts the state will grow by 23,000 people from April 1, 2009, through this coming April. That's small growth, to be sure. Florida has been known to grow by 300,000 to 400,000 people a year.

At this point, however, any growth is positive. From April 2008 through April 2009, the state lost roughly 57,000 people - the first decline since World War II.

"It appears the state's population loss was a one-year occurrence," Stan Smith, BEBR's director, says in a written announcement.

The numbers indicate Florida's population will rise from 18,750,000 people to 18,773,000 people from April 2009 through April.

The bureau bases its projections on electric utility hookups and disconnections.

Longer term, the state's population could grow to 21.25 million by 2020, the bureau forecasts.
