Supreme Court justices sworn in ahead of opening - CNBC

LONDON - Britain's new Supreme Court won't hear its first case until Monday, but the justices are already at work.

Shortly after the newly titled justices of the Supreme Court were sworn in Thursday, they got down to business — an impromptu administrative hearing relating to a case they'll decide later this month.

The justices used to be known as Law Lords, and are the country's highest court of appeal. They used to make their rulings from the red benches of the stately House of Lords, in the Houses of Parliament.

But now — along with their new titles and new, gold-trimmed black robes — the justices have a new home: the Supreme Court building. Previously the Middlesex Guildhall, it is just across Parliament Square opposite the Palace of Westminster and has plush spectator seating. The justices sit at semicircular benches fixed at ground level, rather than on raised platforms.

The court was created to correct one of Britain's ancient constitutional quirks. It also delivers on a promise by the government to separate the country's judicial and legislative powers after hundreds of years.

Amanda Palmer: Business Tycoon

Who says you have to be shallow and only famous for being famous to build a commercial empire? Look out Khloé, Kim and Kourtney (really?), queen of Punk Cabaret Amanda Palmer is on your tail.

Palmer is gearing up to hit the East Coast with a full band for the first time since releasing her solo debut Who Killed Amanda Palmer.

The run launches Nov. 11 at Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vt., and wraps Nov. 22 at Bijou Theatre in Knoxville, Tenn., after which Amanda will escape winter by heading to Australia for a tour.

Joining the singer as both support and back-up band are Nervous Cabaret, who will add their magic to new arrangements of Palmer's solo album, as well as hits from The Dresden Dolls catalog and the usual mix of surprise covers and oddities.

Before each show, Amanda will invite a select few members of the crowd (chosen via Twitter) into her "floating confessional booth" to "chat with her about sex and God."

Fans who find themselves at the merch table will be confronted with a wealth of Palmer-oriented material, including the "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" DVD (subtitled a "surrealist mystery" and containing 12 videos plus loads of bonus footage).

Also available is the singer's self-published coffee-table book, "Who Killed Amanda Palmer: A Collection of Photographic Evidence." The 130 page book features more than 100 photographs of dead (and sometimes naked) Amanda Palmers. Each photo is accompanied by a story written by Amanda's current boy toy, Neil Gaiman, who recently joined his gal on stage to cover Dudley Moore and Peter Cook's naughty hymn "Jump."

The final piece in Palmer's reclaiming of capitalism from the vapid is her new line of 12 artisan perfumes created with Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. Each fragrance is inspired by the singer's coffee table book, resulting in scents like "Unfortunate Shopping Cart Incident," "Blackberry Jam & Scones" and "Cupcake Spatter Pattern Analysis." (Sounds like the perfect gift for grandma!) The fragrances are exclusively available at the merch booth and at PostWarTrade.com.
