| Snowe, Landrieu Introduce Legislation to Bolster Small Business ... - Investors Business Daily Posted: 11 Dec 2009 08:21 AM PST Dec 11, 2009 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- December 10, 2009 Contact Information: Vicki Ekstrom (Landrieu) 202-224-9431 Matthew Berger (Snowe) 202-224-8493 Snowe, Landrieu Introduce Legislation to Bolster Small Business Participation in International Trade WASHINGTON - U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship Ranking Member Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) and Chair Mary L. Landrieu (D-La.) last night introduced two bipartisan measures to strengthen and improve support for American entrepreneurs seeking opportunities to expand their business, create new jobs and compete in the international market. The Small Business Export Enhancement and International Trade Act (S. 2862) and the Small Business Trade Representation Act (S. 2861)will ensure small businesses have access to the resources and tools needed to explore new export opportunities in emerging markets or expand their current export business. "Small businesses face particular challenges in exporting, and the bills that Chair Landrieu and I have introduced will take great strides toward ensuring their greater participation in international trade," said Ranking Member Snowe. "By improving and bolstering critical Small Business Administration (SBA) lending and assistance programs, we will be giving our nation's entrepreneurs a helping hand in surviving, diversifying, and competing effectively in the international marketplace. Additionally, the Small Business Trade Representation Act would once and for all establish an Assistant United States Trade Representative for Small Business, a critical position that will help ensure American small businesses are at the forefront of trade policy considerations." "Building upon legislation that I have introduced in the last three Congresses, including, S. 1196 the Small Business International Trade Enhancements Act of 2009 that I introduced in June of this year, this bipartisan legislation will ensure that small businesses seeking to export their goods and services will have access to the resources they need to successfully expand into foreign markets," Chair Landrieu said. "With health premiums increasing more each year and cash registers at home not ringing like they used to, exporting has become a practical solution for small firms. Expanding opportunities for small business trade is not only vital to the financial security of our entrepreneurs, it is vital to the recovery of our economy." The Small Business Export Enhancement and International Trade Act contains several crucial provisions, including ones to: *Establish an SBA Associate Administrator for International Trade to carry out the Agency's international trade programs and formulate its trade and export policy; *Bolster the number of SBA export finance specialists assigned to Export Assistance Centers; fivefilters.org featured article: Normalising the crime of the century by John Pilger |
| Business purchases South-Town - St. Cloud Times Posted: 11 Dec 2009 08:28 AM PST A local refrigeration business has purchased Golden Valley-based South-Town Refrigeration for an undisclosed amount. SCR, formerly known as St. Cloud Refrigeration, announced the acquisition Thursday. Co-owner Mike Fitch said South-Town has been SCR's biggest competitor for decades. South-Town's clients have included major grocery stores and other large corporate accounts that SCR hasn't been able to reach. The acquisition likely makes SCR the biggest refrigeration contractor in the state, he said. Fitch said the acquisition makes it so the two companies are no longer competing for business. "It's great not to be competitors anymore," he said. South-Town Refrigeration employs 30 people and opened in 1953. SCR has more than 140 employees and opened in 1957. It has offices in Baxter, Rochester and Mankato. fivefilters.org featured article: Normalising the crime of the century by John Pilger |

| Procter & Gamble buys Sara Lee's Ambi Pur business - NewOrleans.Com Posted: 11 Dec 2009 08:14 AM PST Procter & Gamble buys Sara Lee's Ambi Pur businessWritten by Associated Press | Friday, 11 December 2009 04:15 Business News AP DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (AP) - Procter & Gamble Co. is buying Sara Lee Inc.'s Ambi Pur air freshener business for $320 million euros, or $470 million. The deal adds strength for consumer-products giant P&G in Europe and will complement its Febreze line of deodorizers. Sara Lee of Downers Grove, Ill. said it is selling the unit because it wants to focus on its main business as a food maker. Sara Lee said the air-freshener business generated annual sales of $355 million in fiscal 2009. "The proposed sale of our air care business is the next step in our plan to focus on our core food and beverage businesses, where we have a strong competitive position and can generate superior shareholder returns," said Brenda C. Barnes, CEO of Sara Lee. P&G expects the purchase to boost its market presence with products like car air fresheners. Since P&G bought the Gillette Co. for $57 billion in 2005, P&G has focused on snapping up small businesses. Within the past two years, P&G also sold off its prescription drug business, Folgers coffee, and several smaller brands. The deal is expected to close in fiscal 2010, the companies said. Shares of P&G, which is based in Cincinnati, rose 38 cents to $62.62, and shares of Sara Lee advanced 4 cents to $12.23. ![]() fivefilters.org featured article: Normalising the crime of the century by John Pilger |
