| Oil prices rise on US economic growth data - Asbury Park Press Posted: 29 Jan 2010 07:12 PM PST NEW YORK — Crude oil prices rose Friday after the government said the U.S. economy was growing faster than expected. The 5.7 percent annual growth rate in the fourth quarter was the fastest pace since 2003, according to the Commerce Department. The expansion, which was driven by a jump in exports and business spending on equipment and software, suggested a rise in energy consumption may be around the corner. So far, however, that hasn't happened. America is still burning less gasoline than a year ago, and its appetite for petroleum products has dropped for four straight weeks, the Energy Information Administration said Wednesday. "This could be more of a warning signal," Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research, said of the EIA report. The economic growth rate is expected to cool off later this year, Lynch said, and "it's scary to think where oil demand will be then." Benchmark crude for March delivery added 36 cents to $74 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude for March delivery increased 49 cents to $72.62 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange. In other Nymex trading in February contracts, heating oil fell less than a penny to $1.918 a gallon and gasoline futures rose less than a penny to $1.9182 a gallon. The March contract for natural gas gained 9.7 cents to $5.235 per 1,000 cubic feet. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
| Atmel To Continue With Plan To Sell Smart Card Business - Update - RTT News Posted: 29 Jan 2010 10:51 AM PST
(RTTNews) -
Atmel Corp. (ATML: News ), a provider of microcontroller and touch solutions, Friday announced that following a comprehensive review of alternatives for its ASIC business, it will continue to explore the potential sale of the company's smart card business located in Rousset, France and East Kilbride, UK and that it intends to discontinue potential sale discussions for its customer specific products and aerospace businesses. Atmel's ASIC business is a provider of high performance customer specific integrated circuits and security solutions to the industrial, aerospace and consumer markets operating in three distinct business segments: Smart Cards, Customer Specific Products and Aerospace. In addition, the ASIC business includes an advanced semiconductor wafer fabrication business located in Rousset, France. As per the earlier plans, Atmel has entered into an exclusivity agreement with LFoundry GmbH for the potential sale of this fab business. Atmel has been pursuing strategic alternatives for the ASIC business and related manufacturing assets as part of its transformation plan, which is aimed at focusing on the company's high-growth and high-margin businesses segments. The company further noted that while they are satisfied with the strategic alternatives process for the ASIC business and related manufacturing assets, the proposed sale of the wafer fabrication business in Rousset remains on track, and the company continue to discuss the potential sale of the smart card business segment with interested parties. As part of review, the company also determined that shareholders' interests are best served by Atmel retaining the CSP and Aerospace business segments. Atmel has informed the employee representatives of the Works Council in Rousset that it proposes to sell the smart card business in addition to the wafer fabrication business as part of the company's earlier plans and subject to, continued discussion with interested parties and consultation with the Rousset Works Council. ATML is traded at $4.75 down $0.01 or 0.21% on a volume of 3.098 million shares on the Nasdaq. by RTT Staff Writer For comments and feedback: contact editorial@rttnews.com Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Sly Stone Sues Ex-Business Manager For Millions - digtriad.com Posted: 28 Jan 2010 05:54 PM PST Los Angeles, CA -- Sly Stone is suing a former business manager and others claiming tens of millions of dollars in royalties were kept from the singer. Stone, whose real name is Sylvester Stewart, was the frontman of the 1970s funk group Sly and The Family Stone. He sued former manager Gerald Goldstein and several companies in Los Angeles on Thursday, claiming they kept 20 years of royalty payments from Stone and leveraged his work and rights to pay for their lavish lifestyles. Goldstein has produced numerous other artists. Efforts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful. The lawsuit claims Goldstein and others set up several companies to divert the royalty payments and borrow against Stone's work. Some of Stone's hits include "Dance to the Music," "Everyday People" and "Family Affair." Associated PressFive Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
